Sky Contour
Try hiking this trail in the Clarens Valley Conservation Area: The 5.0-km loop trail near the village. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 43 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.
A Clarens Nature Reserve Hiking and MTB Permit is required to walk this trail. There are several hiking trails in the surrounding area. Maps are for sale at several outlets in the village.
Golden Gate
Wodehouse
Enjoy this 9.0-km loop trail near Paballong, Free State. Generally considered a challenging route. This is a very popular area for hiking, running, and walking, so you’ll likely encounter other people while exploring. Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail. You don’t need a permit for this hike, though you do need to pay the National Park entrance fee (or show Wild Card) at Glen Reenen or the Hotel reception. Take binoculars for checking out the game, which might be far away.
Brandwag Buttress
Discover this 2.1-km out-and-back trail in Golden Gate. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 11 min to complete. Brandwag Buttress which means ‘Sentinel’ in Afrikaans shows off with some seriously golden sunrise and sunset views, hence the name ‘Golden Gate’. The route is expertly laid out with a clearly marked path, as well as being supported by fixed chains along the way.
Boskloof
Try this 2.1-km out-and-back trail. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 51 min to complete. The route to Boskloof (Afrikaans for Bush Gorge) is a short, easy back-and-forth trail starting from the Glen Reenen Rest Camp. Most of the walk is along a gentle upward path through dense vegetation. Near the end of the trail – at the foot of a overhanging sandstone cliff – the route rises above the vegetation line and gives a view of the Glen Reenen Campsite. The ravine is incredible and definitely a picture perfect location.
Mountain Retreat
Get to know this 1.1-km out-and-back trail near Kudumane, Free State. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 35 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. A beautiful setting and stunning views, with the opportunity for some interesting hikes in the sandstone hills. This is a short hike up the ridge which overlooks the Eastern side of the slopes. Navigation along the route can be challenging as the trails are not well-signed, having the map downloaded ahead of time can help keep you on track.
