Summer (November to February) in Clarens offers mild temperatures and the chance to enjoy activities throughout the day without becoming too hot. Occasional thunderstorms may occur, but overall, the climate is comfortable. The evenings are slightly cooler, requiring a light jersey for outdoor sitting. Clarens is a malaria-free area, adding to the appeal.

Autumn (March to May) brings dropping night temperatures and the captivating transformation of deciduous trees, which adorn Clarens with vibrant autumn colours. It’s a popular time for photography enthusiasts.

Winter (June to August) can be very cold, with chilly nights. However, the days are typically clear and sunny, although a biting wind from the snow-capped mountains can be felt.

Spring (September to October) is particularly beautiful, as fruit trees blossom and the weather starts to warm up. The wind becomes gentler, and although the countryside remains dry until the summer rains arrive, the scenery becomes more vibrant.

Weather conditions in mountainous areas can change rapidly, so visitors are advised to be prepared. It’s recommended to have a hat, sunscreen, and warm clothing on hand. The days are generally sunny, but temperatures can drop significantly once the sun sets behind the mountains, with winter nights reaching as low as -14°C. The lack of cloud cover allows for exceptionally bright stars on cold winter nights. Rainfall is mainly concentrated in the summer months, with short-duration storms. Clarens experiences low rainfall, resulting in a dry atmosphere, so visitors from more humid climates may want to pack moisturizer.

Snowfall in Clarens is unpredictable. The surrounding mountains, including the Maluti Mountains, occasionally receive a dusting of snow during winter, offering picturesque photography opportunities. Skiing is possible at Afriski in Lesotho, a few hours away, with a regular shuttle service operating from Clarens during winter.
